ishare

Ishare, the social responsibility initiative is coordinated and implemented by the PTA and students of Rajagiri Public School and kindergarten with the guidance of the school management. This project is focused to inculcate in the minds of the students, the importance of their social responsibilities and the need to share by sacrificing from their own pocket money. Through periodic interactive sessions we could give awareness of the programme “Ishare” among the students and to propagate the concept “One rupee per day” among the children. Student leaders spoke on the project and funding model to the students in lower classes to make the programme appealing to the whole student community.

ANNADHANAM

The children of Rajagiri Public School & Kindergarten, Kalamaserry undertake to serve 150 food packets every wednesday for one year at Taluk Government Hospital, Aluva . This is being done through “Ashwasalayam” Missionaries of Our Lady of Health, Nazreth Road, Aluva.

The money for this endeavour is collected through the “ishare” programme of the Management and the PTA. The“ishare” programme was started in  Rajagiri Public School & Kindergarten in 2009.  Today there are  31  schools in Kerala having this programme and an amount of almost Rs. 1.65crore has been collected and used for socially beneficial causes. Under this, each child in the school sets aside 1 Rupee every day..The money thus collected is used for several programmes under the  category –Children’s health  care, Public infrastructure, Scholarships/ Educational support and Humanitarian support each year . This helps to develop the habit of sharing among the children and thereby they learn to care for their less privileged brothers and sisters.

Sharing our joy of supporting Kerala Blind School Society

The first “ ishare’ project for the year was providing 20 specially designed beds for the children of the residential school run by Kerala Blind School Society at Keezhmad, Aluva. It is the only school for the blind in Ernakulam district and is celebrating  its 50th anniversary.  With the assistance of several loving and giving people/ organizations they are constructing a new hostel and the beds provided by our children will go a long way in making the lives of the children there a little more comfortable.

After the initial visit to the school in July by PTA Hon. Secretary and a few parents, a group of 17 children from the XII th standard accompanied by two parents visited the school on 10th August .  I was one of the parents fortunate enough to be able to visit the school along with the children.

Mr. Sunil, a senior teacher in the school gave us a brief but informative account of the school and the special problems faced by the blind. Through a simple exercise he made us understand, to some extent, the challenges faced by the blind ,both in daily life and in getting an education.  He asked us to close our eyes and recollect the number of windows in the room we were sitting in… no one could give the right answer ! He pointed out that our learning starts right from the moment we are born – we learn by imitation- we imitate because we can see…. how then do you teach a child who cannot see ?

They are taught “basic life skills” and “mobility & orientation skills” first, and then formal education is given. There are only 5-6 children in a class so that the teacher can give sufficient attention to each child. It was really touching to see Mr.Saji V.S, the teacher in charge of imparting mobility and orientation skills , standing holding the hands of a 11 year old child( she looked only 5-6 years old)  who was totally blind , with knock knees  and club feet, teaching her to walk. As we were talking to him, that little girl started asking for water. A classmate of hers asked for permission to get water for her. She went confidently out of the class, across the car porch to where the water filter was kept and came back with a glass of water. At the threshold of the class she stopped and very courteously said “may I come in?”  Our children enjoyed their interaction with the children of the school. After reminding them to join us for VISTA 2012, we left, thanking God for our sight and the opportunity we got to help these brothers and sisters of ours.

Mr . Varghese Alexander, Secretary Kerala Blind School Society accompanied by five children were present for the Valedictory function of VISTA 2012. The cheque for

Rs. 1,25000/-was handed over by Rev.Fr.Jose Alex Oruthayapilly CMI and Rev.Fr.Jijo Kadavan CMI in the presence of our children and principal Mrs. Susan Varghese Cherian.  The immensely talented children gave a melodious rendition of a beautiful song of thanksgiving.

It is up to each one of us to nurture this habit of sharing in our children. Let us together take forward this noble venture initiated by Adv.Mathew B Kurian, our ex-PTA President.
